U.S. Department of Energy President - elect speaks on the need for urgent action on an American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan To finally spark the creation of a clean energy economy, we will double the production of alternative energy in the next three years. We will modernize more than 75% of federal buildings and improve the energy efficiency of two million American homes, saving consumers and taxpayers billions on our energy bills. In the process, we will put Americans to work in new jobs that pay well and can't be outsourced - jobs building solar panels and wind turbines, constructing fuel-efficient cars and buildings, and developing the new energy technologies that will lead to even more jobs, more savings, and a cleaner, safer planet in the bargain. Department of Energy 2008 In May 2008, DOE released a groundbreaking report, 20% Wind Energy by 2030: increasing Wind Energy's Contribution to U.S. Electricity Supply. The report provides a road map to reaching this important goal, including identifying steps and challenges. As part of the research behind having 20 percent wind energy by 2030, NREL team members were tasked with updating wind resource maps. The undated maps were a critical component of the wind deployment model used to develop the 20 percent scenario. Using ArcGIS Desktop software (through a U.S. government license agreement), the NREL team can determine the most favorable locations for wind farms based on the cost of transmission, locations of load centers and wind resources, and the layout of the electrical grid.
